Tayra
Eira barbaraBlue
The Tayra is a long, muscular mustelid of Neotropical forests, equally at home climbing, swimming, and running as it follows fruit, roosts, and well-worn game trails. Dark fur can show a pale chest patch, and a flexible spine helps it twist through branches in sudden pursuit, while activity shifts between day and night depending on food and the risk of meeting people.

The animal behind the card
Omnivorous, it takes fruit, invertebrates, eggs, carrion, and small vertebrates, and it may raid poultry when forest thins into farms. Dens in hollow trees, rock piles, or burrows anchor large home ranges that rise and fall with seasonal flushes, and the animal is mostly solitary outside brief mating periods.
Deforestation, hunting, and new roads break up the cover it needs, even though the Tayra still thrives in many protected areas. The species is a quiet forest generalist, sharp-eyed and opportunistic, and a good sign that tropical woods still have vertical structure, water, and the messy edge habitats generalists use.
Bestiary facts
Unlike many mustelids, the tayra is active mainly by day and eats large amounts of fruit as well as animal prey.
