Alpine Chamois
Rupicapra rupicapraBlue
High above alpine valleys, an alpine chamois moves with effortless grace across cliffs that look impossible to climb. Its compact body, strong shoulders and spring loaded legs are all tuned for life on the edge.

The animal behind the card
Specialized hooves with hard rims and soft, grippy centers let the animal cling to tiny rock ledges, even when dusted with snow. In summer, it grazes on tough grasses and alpine flowers, then descends slightly lower when winter wraps the peaks in ice.
When alarmed, a group of chamois can explode into sudden motion, bounding up slopes that would slow humans to a crawl. For those who catch only a glimpse, the animal seems less like a goat and more like a living echo of the mountains themselves.
Bestiary facts
Alpine chamois treat steep rock like level ground, bouncing where most animals would freeze.
