The animal behind the card

The pup spends much of its early life hauled out on ice or crowded beaches, surrounded by the rumble of adult calls and the occasional splash of a slipping neighbor. Warm milk and close contact keep it safe from the chill that seeps into everything in the Arctic.

When it first dares to slide into the water, the pup clings to its mother’s side, learning how to surface through cracks and haul its heavy body back onto the ice. One day the tiny nubs in its gums will grow into impressive tusks, and the timid youngster will join the thunderous gatherings of adult walruses that define this frozen coastline.
